Once a thriving sugar town dominated by the Waialua Sugar Mill, Waialua suffered a huge blow to its local industry when the mill closed down. Since then, however, the mill has been reborn as the site of many small factories and workshops. 






A charming town on Oahu’s North Shore, Haleiwa is known worldwide as a surfing destination. There is much more to Haleiwa than surfing, though. A rare blend of history, natural beauty and small-town atmosphere, Haleiwa is well worth spending a few hours in before or after you visit to the famous beaches nearby.
As if beautiful beaches, scenic mountains and lush rainforests weren’t enough, Hawai‘i also offers the world the sweet pleasure of chocolate. With thousands of acres of farmland and the perfect growing weather, this delicious treat is a natural for the Islands.
Hawaii’s lifeguards are the best of the best. Superbly trained and conditioned, they are elite guardians of the beaches – and the many visitors and locals alike who use them. We spoke to several top lifeguards to get their thoughts on keeping the beaches safe for all.
Technology is everywhere these days, even at the beach. Photographer Doug Peebles has spent decades photographing Hawaii’s beaches, and now he’s sharing his beach savvy with the world. He’s created a “best beaches” app for smartphones that helps you find the perfect stretch of sand.

Sea salt has been appearing on menus and in recipes more and more in recent years, but it is nothing new to the Hawaiian Islands. The art of salt-making has been practiced here for centuries, and the town of Hanapepe has been a salt-making center since ancient times.
The best way to learn is to experience, and an experience is exactly what the Pacific Rim Children’s Chorus offers. Children from widely varying regions and backgrounds gather here in Hawai‘i once a year to hone their skills in vocal performance and learn about the cultures and traditions of Pacific Rim countries.
Playing with fire? Not exactly, but the effortless grace of the accomplished fireknife dancer makes it look almost like a game. In an incredible display of agility and bravery, these dancers carry on a thrilling tradition – defying the danger inherent in the flames and cutting edges.
