Sea salt has been appearing on menus and in recipes more and more in recent years, but it is nothing new to the Hawaiian Islands. The art of salt-making has been practiced here for centuries, and the town of Hanapepe has been a salt-making center since ancient times.
Hanapepe salt is valued not only for its taste, but also for the medicinal properties it is believed to have. How is it made and what makes it so special? We travel to Hanapepe, on the west side of Kaua‘i, to find out.
