Lantern FloatingEvery Memorial Day, thousands of people gather at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu for the Lantern Floating Ceremony. It’s both spectacular in scale and moving in its aim, to remember the lives of those who have passed on.

Participants launch delicate lanterns onto the ocean waves, with each lantern representing life and carrying its owner’s wishes for a peaceful future.

The Lantern Floating Ceremony is a particularly beautiful reflection of the Islands’ unique blend of cultures and traditions. It’s difficult to imagine Memorial Day in Hawai‘i without it.
