Merrie Monarch FestivalPractitioners and lovers of the distinctly Hawaiian art of hula look forward to the Merrie Monarch Festival all year. Televised statewide, it is the world’s foremost showcase of hula, with “halau,” or schools of hula, demonstrating their mastery of the dance’s various forms.

Dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, known as the “Merrie Monarch” for his patronage of the arts, this week-long festival includes Hawaiian crafts, arts, music and a grand parade through Hilo, as well as the main event – the hula competition.

The next Merrie Monarch Festival will be held April 24-30, 2011. As always, it will be in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.  If you’re looking for an authentic glimpse into Hawaiian culture and tradition, it’s hard to beat.
